- 돈오 김 소설 『태극』 연구 ― 기존 작품과의 영향관계를 중심으로 -
본고에서는 독특한 창작 전략(비한국적 소재, 작가적 자아의 투입, 서구 패 권주의 규탄)으로 호주에서 입지를 굳힌 돈오 김의 마지막 장편 『태극』의 특 색을 파악하고자 하였다. 그 결과 『태극』은 기존 세 작품과 차별화되게 한국 적 소재를 취하고 있으나 그 주제나 구성에서 전작의 작풍을 그대로 간직하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 전작 세 작품이 비한국적 소재를 다룸에 따라 작가의 주변과 다소 격리된 원격·간접성을 띄었던 데 비해 『태극』은 한국의 통일이란 작가의 직접적 주변 소재를 차용함에 따라 주인공 ‘고’와 작가적 자아의 싱크로-율(synchro率)이 훨씬 강화되었고 통일을 바라보는 한국 정치인의 시각을 비판적으로 부각하고 있다는 점에서 차별화된다. 그러나 다음과 같이 전작의 기조를 전반적으로 유 지하고 있음을 확인하였다. 첫째, 『태극』은 전작 세 작품과 마찬가지로, 작가적 자아로 추정되는 ‘고’를 주인공으로 등장시켜 아시아 약소국들의 비자존적 운명을 조종하는 서구 패권 주의에 시종 비판적 시선을 보내는 동시에 서구 패권주의와 연계된 한국 정치 의 민낯을 부가적으로 다루고 있다. 둘째, 『태극』은 『암호』의 담론적 장치를 그대로 계승해 시간 불일치 (Anachronies)의 기법을 적극적으로 구사함으로써 ‘고’와 차 여사의 분리 서 술을 통해 독자의 작품 몰입도를 제고한다. 회상과 예상을 통해 시간적 순서 를 재배열함으로써 다양한 추론적 단서를 제공하여 독자의 긴장감을 극대화하 고 있다. 셋째, 『태극』은 『차이나맨』과 마찬가지로 우화적 격자(마지막 날들)의 삽입 을 통해 한국 정치인들의 이기적 무모함과 강대국의 무자비하고 무책임한 작 태를 풍자적으로 비판한다. 『태극』에 삽입된 ‘마지막 날들’(Last Days)은 자 신들의 야욕에 사로잡혀 소모적 대결을 벌이다 끝내 우주의 미아로 전락하는 화성의 두 위성, 포브스와 데이모스에 대한 우화이다. 작가는 이를 통해 한국 의 정치인은 물론 한국의 통일 지형에 절대적 영향력을 행사하는 강대국(미국 과 소련)에 의미심장한 메시지를 던진다.
A Study on Don’o Kim’s Novel, The Grand Circle - Focusing on the influence of his previous works on The Grand Circle
In this paper, The Grand Circle, the last novel of Don’o Kim who established himself in Australia with his unique creative strategy (non-Korean material, the input of writer’s ego, and condemnation of Western hegemony), was sought to identify the characteristics. As a result, The Grand Circle is differentiated from his previous three works, but it can be confirmed that the theme or composition retains the style of the previous works. While the three previous works were remote and indirect, because they were somewhat isolated from the writer’s surroundings, The Grand Circle is differentiated in that it further strengthens self-synchro of the main character “Go” and the writer’s ego and critically highlights the view of Korean politicians on unification. However, it was confirmed that the overall stance of the previous works was maintained as follows: First, The Grand Circle, like the previous three works, features Ko, who is believed to be the writer’s ego, giving a critical eye to Western hegemony, which manipulates the non-existent fate of Asian weak countries, while also additionally dealing with the bare face of Korean politics linked to Western hegemony. Second, The Grand Circle enhances the readers’ immersion in the work through the separation of Ko and Madam Cha by actively using the technique of Anachronies by inheriting the discourse mechanism of Password. By rearranging the temporal sequence through reminiscence and anticipation, various inference cues are provided to maximize the reader’s tension. Third, The Grand Circle like China Man satirically criticizes the selfish recklessness of Korean politicians and the ruthless and irresponsible behavior of powerful nations through the insertion of allegorical lattices (Last Days). Last Days in The Grand Circle is an allegory about two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, which are obsessed with their ambitions, engage in wasteful confrontations and end up in the missing children of the universe. Through this, the writer sends a meaningful message to not only Korean politicians but also to powerful nations (the U.S. and the Soviet Union), which exert absolute influence on Korea’s unification landscape.
