The national reconstruction project of the 1960s was gendered, placing women in the private domain, calling them ‘house angels’ of the ‘Sweet Home,’ and requiring them to conform to the gendered culture of social code. However, female intellectual figures portray the realized ‘unhappiness’ of women who believe in the promise of ‘happiness.’ The promise of ‘happiness,’ which is deferred and contrary, raises questions about ‘happiness’ itself. Park Kyung-ri’s Market and Battlefield shows the point where ‘Affect Alien’ is born due to the actions of ideologies that create an attachment to ‘good life’ through Nam Ji-young’s narrative. The emotionally marginalized person, who breaks the mood, is problematic in that he or she will be able to speak of his or her misfortunes that have been suppressed and reveal the reality of happiness demanded by the ruling order. War is an event of death that destroys everyone’s lives, but it is also an event of life that allows female figures to advance into public spaces. The violence of war experience does not only stop the subject from being emotionally alienated, but also moves on to being an ethical subject. The experience of exhaustion due to daily disconnection opens up to one’s vulnerability and accidentally encounters with others, creating the possibility of implementing the subject beyond its limits. A caring life for others is now an attempt to reconstruct happiness here. In the face of open life contingencies and uncertainties, the subject walks silently along the given path, recognizing that ‘happiness’ is a joy to the impossible. For happiness is to be reinvented every second with others who run into each other on the road.
